Soothe Their Pain! The 7 Best Teethers For Babies

Teething is a necessary evil. Although your little bundle of joy’s grouchiness and irritability can be challenging, the arrival of their milk teeth should be seen as a positive sign that their growth and development is headed in the right direction, signalling their ability to slowly expand their diet towards solids. It’s also important to remember that your child is dealing with an almost constant discomfort so you need to support them in whatever way possible. Teething toys then become an essential aid during this stage of development. We’ve completed a thorough review of the market and identified the best teethers for babies to help you get through this tough time together.

Our approach has been rigorous and logical, with the goal of easing your child’s discomfort always front-of-mind. We’ve taken a number of factors into consideration including safety, versatility and value. We’ve deliberately covered a wide range of teether types as children have varying preferences and you may need to try a few different things out before finding one they become attached to. For my little boy, it was the teething toys which could be frozen as the cold really seemed to help soothe him.

If you like a particular type of teething toy, then you may want to dig a little deeper than just “teethers” or “teething toys” and you may want to look for “crocheted teething toys” or “freezable teething toys”. It’s up to you, but this list will certainly give you a selection of the best you can find.

Below we’ve summarized the results of our search for the best teethers for babies so can quickly review the outcomes, with the detailed review of each item further down. Now let’s get to it! Here are the best teethers for babies so you can ease your baby’s pain A.S.A.P.!

Our Detailed Reviews of The Top 7 Best Teething Toys For Babies

My Son’s Pick - NatureBond Baby Food Feeder / Pacifier / Teething Toy

I’ve started off with the one my son loved. We went through about 10 different teething toys and none stuck until we found this one. We actually hadn’t intended it as a teether, but he would happily chew on this for ages even when there was no food left inside and it really calmed him down when he was struggling.

Safety - 5/5

  • Made from silicone and free from all the nasties
  • Approved by Bureau Veritas
  • Easily washable and hygienic

Versatility - 4/5

  • Doubles as a pacifier, providing extra soothing for your baby
  • Can we used as a feeder with fresh or frozen vegetables, fruits and baby food
  • Comes with several different “sacs” for different ages as well as a twist-motion adjusting functionality so you can be sure that it’s the perfect fit for your little one
  • Ergonomically designed and easy to use for little hands
  • Lacks a variety of colors to choose from

Value - 5/5

  • Top quality product
  • Continues to provide use as your child grows, even beyond the teething years
  • Not overly expensive for what you get, at around USD15

Downsides And Things To Watch Out For

  • Not really suitable for liquids such as breast milk or juice (but here’s one that is, just in case!)
  • Giving this to your child straight from the freezer can be a bit of a shock for them, be sure to let it warm up just a little before letting them chew and suck to their heart’s content!

Won't Break The Bank - Nuby Ice Gel Teether Keys

In a similar vein to my son’s favorite above, this teether focuses on the soothing effects of the cold to help ease you child’s discomfort. This one also puts the toy in teething toy, and is great fun for little ones to play with!

Safety - 3/5

  • Silicone and free from all the bad stuff
  • Not dishwasher or microwave/sterilizer safe, but easy to handwash

Versatility - 3/5

  • Doubles as a fun rattle toy that offers a variety of colors and sounds to stimulate your child
  • Specially designed to remain cold for longer, providing continued relief to your bub
  • Two different colorful options to choose from
  • Does not offer any different sizes for different ages groups

Value - 5/5

  • Affordable on almost any budget, being less than USD5

Downsides And Things To Watch Out For

  • Might be a little too big and awkward for smaller babies or babies less than 3 months old
  • Comes with a warning that if your baby manages to chew through the silicone you should throw the toy out – Unless you baby happens to have really sharp teething and a powerful bite, this probably won’t happen, but its certainly a little odd for a toy that’s meant to be chewed!
  • Curiously only intended to be refrigerated, not frozen. The gel inside can get too cold if frozen, so be careful if you put it in the freezer!

That Personal Touch - 3. Panny & Mody Personalised Sensory Teething Bracelet

If your child really loves to show off their individuality, this teething bracelet from Panny & Mody is perfect. It looks stunning and is made of high-quality materials that the little one will love. The sheer gorgeousness coupled with the ability to personalise this toy make it a wonderful gift for the little bubs in your life. A worthy member on our list of best teethers for babies.

Safety - 4/5

  • Silicone and wood, free from all the nasties
  • Dishwasher and microwave/sterilizer safe (below 356F)

Versatility - 4/5

  • The clicking and clacking of the beads and rings provides auditory stimulation for your child and an opportunity to practice their fine motor skills
  • The silicon beads and letter beads are all chewable, and the wood beads offer a good contrast for teething
  • The personalisation options are wonderful, and include the ability to add up to 7 letters for a name and choose the beads
  • Can be placed in the fridge to add some soothing from the cold, though they will quickly warm up

Value - 4/5

  • Slightly more expensive at USD15-20, but that’s the be expected for a personalised product
  • Comes with a 100% money-back guarantee

Downsides And Things To Watch Out For

  • The limitation of 7 letters for the name could be a problem for some
  • Wooden teethers can be a little hard for some babies but at least there are also silicon beads

Awww Cute! - Itzy Ritzy Teething Mitt

Teething mitts are a wonderful idea, I really love them. It’s just so cute seeing your little gleefully chewing on their own hand, but in a safe and healthy way! Because they don’t need to be held, they are also suitable for younger babies. Itzy Ritzy also offers loads of different variety with this teething toy, so there’s bound to be something that suits your child’s designer taste!

Safety - 4/5

  • Silicone and polyester, free from BPA and PVC but unclear if its free from lead or phthalates. However there haven’t been any reports of any issues, so I’d say there’s nothing to worry about
  • Machine or hand washable and then air-dried
  • May actually help protect your child from scratching themselves if they are prone to this

Versatility - 4/5

  • The glove makes a crinkly sound to stimulate your child
  • Heaps of different colors, styles and designs to choose from
  • Comes with a Velcro strap to make sure the glove has a secure fit on your child’s hand

Value - 3/5

  • Mid-range price around the USD10 mark – If you could score a brand new one for USD8, I think you’ve got a good deal
  • Your child may outgrow this one quite quickly

Downsides And Things To Watch Out For

  • Be careful with very young children who are still developing the gross and fine motor skills as some of the designs (eg. unicorn, llama, fox) have slightly pointier edges and they may inadvertently poke themselves in the eye with the teether when trying to shove it in their mouth
  • Great for young babies around 3-6 months old but may be too tight for bigger or older children

Bang For Buck - Hahaland 10 Piece Teething Rattle Set

New Baby Toys has already done an in-depth review of this rattle set because we knew it was one of the best teethers for babies, particularly when it comes to value! Who needs one teething toy when you can have ten! Plus they come with a great little storage box for safe keeping or travels to grandmas house. You can’t go wrong here.

Safety - 4/5

  • Acrylonitrile Butadiene StyreneProne, whatever that is (I think its some kind of Silicon). Free from nasties though, that’s what matters!
  • Dishwasher and microwave/steamer safe, though there have been reports of water getting trapped inside them
  • All the toys are free from sharp edges and appropriately sized to ensure there’s no choking hazards

Versatility - 4/5

  • Most of these toys double as a rattle and a teether. Plus, I mean, come on, it’s 10 different toys! How versatile is that!
  • Loads of shapes, textures, colors and sounds to entertain your little bub for hours
  • Comes with a case for easy storage and transport

Value - 4/5

  • This product falls in the USD25-30 range, meaning you are getting each toy about $3. That’s great value!
  • The manufacturer also offers replacement and full refund if you are not satisfied

Downsides And Things To Watch Out For

  • Careful when cleaning in the dishwasher, steaming or microwaving as there have been some reports of water seeping into the clear rattle ball casings. Potentially steam these for a short time only or it may be safer to handwash these, but at least you can get a refund if you do seem to have this problem

The Swiss Army Toy - The Very Hungry Caterpillar Crinkle Teething Book

It may seem like a bit of an odd combination, a book and a teething toy, but remember, babies put everything in their mouths! As can be expected, the World of Eric Carle has featured their star, the Very Hungry Caterpillar, and focused on all the different foods he ate to help babies begin to learn about numbers. It’s got lots of hidden surprises too, so your baby gets loads of stimulation! There is really just so much versatility here, even though its not a dedicated teether, this one has to go on our list of the best teethers for babies!

Safety - 4/5

  • Polyester and BPA-free silicone, but unclear whether it is phthalate/lead/latex free
  • Machine washable and air-dried
  • Super soft and no pointy bits

Versatility - 5/5

  • There are simply loads of ways your child can enjoy this toy!
  • On top of the teething corners which have landed this toy in our list, it’s obviously a book which you can read to your child and begin to teach them about numbers and counting
  • It also includes a hook for attaching to things and so can act as a dangly toy for your child to swat at, helping to improve their motor skills
  • The pages also crinkle, squeak and include flaps and textures for your child to fiddle and play with, so it promotes sensory and fine motor development

Value - 4/5

  • This comes in at around USD10 which I think is pretty great value for the amount of variety that this toy offers and for the brand of the World of Eric Carle

Downsides And Things To Watch Out For

  • The main downside here is that this is a baby book first and a teething toy second. It’s certainly a wonderful addition to your child’s world, but you are likely to need more than just this book to help with their teething pains (if you are looking for more books for little bubs, check out our review of our top choice for baby’s first book!)
  • This does not include the full original story, it just includes the things the Very Hungry Caterpillar ate and sequential numbers (only up to 5) to help learn counting

Old School Vibe - Joliecraft Woodland Friends Rattle and Teether

This one has a very nostalgic feel to it. The combination and wood and crocheted cotton really make it feel like this could be a toy handed down from your grandma. Then again, would you really want your baby chewing on something your grandma chewed on 60 years ago?! Horrible thought aside, this is a classic toy that is beautifully made and presents a super cute little character for your baby to befriend.

Safety - 4/5

  • Cotton, poly fiber filling and wood – There is literally nothing to worry about here
  • Hand wash and air-dry only
  • No pointy bits

Versatility - 4/5

  • Doubles as a rattle and as their new best friend
  • Several different woodland cuties to choose from
  • The different textures of wood and cotton provide options for your child to address their teething discomfort

Value - 3/5

  • This is handcrafted, so it comes with a price-tag. Its around USD15, which is reasonably expensive for what it is, but it’s truly gorgeous

Downsides And Things To Watch Out For

  • Given this toy is for chewing, not just rattling, there is a risk that you baby will chew off some parts of the cotton parts of the toy. This risk is very low for most designs, but the deer’s little antlers are quite delicate and might come loose. Be careful

Buyer Beware | Popularity Doesn't Translate To Quality

I am now going to address the elephant in the room. Or rather the giraffe that’s not in the room? Almost every single list of the best teethers for babies out there includes the age-old favorite Sophie the Giraffe. I initially had this on my list too. However, I really think that you should exercise caution when getting this toy. To help describe this, I’ve done an even-handed and impartial review of Sophie, consistent with the rest of the toys on our list of the best teethers for babies. You will see that she fairs quite poorly against her competition. Buyer beware!

Careful Of They Hype - Sophie The Giraffe

Could a review of the best teethers for babies ever be complete without considering Sophie the Giraffe?! Easily one of the most popular toys for newborns and babies, these things are everywhere, and that must be saying something, right? Right?? My personal view is that this toy is actually quite bad, particularly now that I’ve done a proper review, plus we got one for my son, and he never really took to it. That being said, there are literally tens of thousands of positive reviews out there for this product and it’s continued to be successful for over 50 years, so it must decent, surely?

Safety - 2/5

  • 100% Rubber made from the Hevea tree, and of course free from all the usual uglies (BPA, Phthalate, Latex, Lead)
  • Prone to mould on the inside
  • Should not be immersed in water (are you serious!?), not dishwasher or microwave/steamer safe. Recommended to be cleaned with a damp cloth after each use
  • At least there’s no pointy bits

Versatility - 3/5

  • Has a cute little squeaker to keep your child engaged
  • The Hevea tree rubber produces its own distinct smell which makes it familiar and comforting for your child
  • The giraffe shape is not only cute, its also practical and provides lots of different shapes and bits for your child to chew on and settle their discomfort
  • Comes with a cute little story book about Sophie
  • Does not offer any variety in color or size

Value - 3/5

  • For what you get, and relative to the alternatives out there, Sophie is very overpriced at around USD20. Perhaps Hevea trees are really expensive to grow?

Downsides And Things To Watch Out For

  • The combination of being prone to mould on the inside and the lack of cleaning options are actually very worrying. Even some of the major news networks have addressed this, and though they try and downplay it, I’d rather not have mold in my child’s mouth! I would recommend avoiding this product, and am not sure why it consistently appears on everyone’s list of the best teethers for babies, but of course the choice is yours.
